13. The Harmful Calcium Yo-Yo Effect
This section describes in detail the calcium yo-yo effect and how this is harmful to bones. Here we are talking about calcium going in and out of the bones (the yo-yo effect) thus eroding bone-making cells and causing bones to age and weaken prematurely.
Whenever calcium goes into bone, osteoblasts (bone-making cells) are used up. When this happens too often, the in-and-out movement of calcium can lead to osteoporosis. The ‘calcium yo-yo effect’ refers to a high rate of ‘bone turnover’ (i.e. high enough to eventually promote osteoporosis).
A metaphorical and a technical explanation is given for each movement of calcium going into or going out of the bones (the reader is invited to read both). It is presented in this manner as a way of explaining the ‘mechanism’ behind the yo-yo effect that causes osteoporosis.
As you read through each of the six steps that follow keep in mind that in reality calcium is being pumped in and out of bones several times a day as part of the natural way the body works. The less vigorous and frequent this yo-yo pumping action the better for bones.
Step 1A. Metaphorical explanation – acidity pulls calcium from the bones.
When you consume non-alkaline food (dairy milk, animal protein, sugar, fruit juice, refined carbohydrate foods, grains, sodas and other 'junk' foods) the acidity level of the blood goes up. The body hates this as it much prefers alkaline foods (whole fruit, vegetables, salads, nuts, seeds and pulses, eaten in moderation and chewed well). As a result, the bloodstream has to defend itself against the invading acidity, and it pulls calcium from the bones (calcium acts like a reserve army of alkaline soldiers). In fact, the calcium that is pulled from the bones is so alkaline that the blood stream cannot use it in other parts of the body. So the alkaline calcium stays circulating in the bloodstream quite a long time. During this period the calcium gets dumped in nooks and crannies of the body causing harmful calcification. Eventually the alkaline calcium molecules in the bloodstream become stuck to the acidic invading molecules, and are expelled from the body. This makes the acidity of the bloodstream go down.
Step 1B. Technical explanation – acidity causes resorption of calcium.
The alkalinity of blood is pH 7.365. The body is required to keep alkaline/acidity levels of plasma tightly regulated. When acidic food is consumed PTH (parathyroid hormone) is released into the blood to raise levels of calcium and reduce levels of acidic protein molecules. In response to PTH, calcium is resorbed (from the bones) into blood. This calcium is too alkaline for the body to use in biochemical functions and consequently circulates in the blood for long periods of time in an attempt to become acidic enough (neutral enough) for use. Some of this circulating calcium is deposited in tissues, organs and arteries, thus contributing to harmful calcification in different the parts of the body. Eventually the alkaline calcium molecules bind with the acidic protein molecules and are excreted in urine.
